Teenage actors spotlight children’s mental health in The Coat

A short film using a striking and relatable metaphor to reveal the invisible weight of children’s worries has been released online today during Children’s Mental Health Week.

Local teenagers are the heart of The Coat, bringing to life the hidden emotional burdens many children carry. Produced by children’s mental health charity Kids Inspire, the film had its premiere on Tuesday 10 February 2026 at Chelmsford Theatre Studio, attended by cast, crew, supporters, the Mayor and Mayoress of Chelmsford, and Kids Inspire staff and volunteers.

About the film and project

The Coat uses a striking visual metaphor: a coat bursting with handwritten negative thoughts. It invites audiences to step into a child’s world, experiencing the weight of worries - some shaped by trauma - which are often heavy, overwhelming, and unseen. The film also demonstrates how the right specialist support can transform lives, helping children and families feel seen, heard, and more resilient.

The release comes at a time when one in five children in the UK are struggling with their mental health, with half of all mental health problems beginning before the age of 14.

Sue Bell OBE DL, CEO, Kids Inspire said:
The Coat reflects the hidden emotional weight that many children carry every day. At Kids Inspire, we know how hard it can be for children to ask for help - especially when they don’t yet feel safe enough to do so. This film is our way of saying that support is here. Children deserve trauma-responsive care, understanding, and a place where they can be met with compassion, not judgment.”

Community collaboration

Directed by local filmmaker Adam Cameron King, The Coat features a lead teenager alongside 16 other young people from Essex drama schools; Mushroom Theatre Company, The Drama Centre and Jigsaw Arts. Filming took place at Great Baddow High School and Kids Inspire’s HQ, with local uniform shops donating costume items. Everyone involved volunteered their time, united by a shared commitment to raising awareness and supporting children’s mental health.

The film reflects the trauma-informed approach of children’s mental health charity Kids Inspire, highlighting the vital role families play in recovery. No child should struggle alone.
