"Ahoy" Life Changing Experience Kids Inspire Sailors

Kids Inspire, a local Chelmsford charity based in Chelmsford, work in and around almost 35 schools, providing therapeutic care and support to traumatised and distressed children and families. They recently returned from a weeks sailing aboard the Farimir in conjunction with the Cirdan Trust. The Cirdan trust has a fleet of large sailing boats, which they use to offer trips to youth groups. Aboard the boats, young people are given the opportunity to learn different aspects of sailing, to sail the boat themselves and be part of watch crews, cooking, cleaning and looking after the boat and their group.

The group sailed from Ipswich, up the Orwell River and out onto the open sea, to make their way up to Burnham-On-Crouch, where they then sailed on to Mersea, Wolveston and back to Ipswich.

None of the young people had ever been on a boat themselves, and some of the staff hadn’t either! They all threw themselves into the challenge and left having made some massive accomplishments; themselves and within their team. Grace; one of the young people said “this trip has been amazing, I never thought I could do so much for myself in just a week. I’ve made some amazing friends and the staff have been legends! Thank you so much!”

The group sailed 113 miles over the course of the week and were all awarded certificates on their departure. Kids Inspire staff member Anna Davies described the trip as a ‘tough and challenging week, but a week where all the young people really benefited from the experience and left with a real sense of achievement’

For some of the group, it was the first time they had been away from home, and Kids Inspire would like to thank The Cirdan Trust and their team for the opportunity and making it an enjoyable experience.
