Brentwood School Gold Challenge Day
On the 27th March, Brentwood Preparatory School pupils took to the track for 2012 seconds of running as part of the Kids Inspire Gold Charity Challenge, in association with the London 2012 Olympics, for which they have managed to raise over £10,500.
Encouraging the enthusiastic young runners along the way was a welcome visit from one of the original 118-118 directory enquiries runners, Colin Carmichael, sporting his trademark white vest, moustache and curly hair. All pupils were eager to run or walk 400 metre laps non-stop for 33 minutes 32 seconds – a total of 2012 seconds – to receive their Gold Charity Challenge award, with Colin keeping energy levels buoyant and positive throughout the challenge. As a result, he was inundated by crowds of excited, engaged pupils and stayed afterwards for photos and autographs.
Mrs Woodford, Director of Sport at Brentwood Preparatory, commented: “It was an incredible day, with every child out there trying to raise money to help others. Our pupils are very fortunate to attend this school - but they are also extremely generous and that makes me very proud of every single one of them. Kids Inspire is a very worthwhile charity. Brentwood Preparatory School was the highest fundraising junior school in the country; there was only one senior school in the whole country that raised more.”
The school was hoping to raise a minimum of £2012 but the generosity of sponsors and house rivalry helped to smash this target more than five times over, raising £10,525.11, with more due to be added in the coming days. In addition, 12 lucky Brentwood pupils received places to take part in a Charity Day parade at the Olympic Stadium on the 1st April 2012 and had the opportunity to run on the 100 metre track prior to the Olympics.
The Kids Inspire Gold Charity Challenge is part of the Official Mass Participation Legacy programme for London 2012, which seeks to encourage exercise and athletics in young children as well as highlighting the need to help disadvantaged and troubled young people in Essex to become valued members of society. Kids Inspire are proud to be working in partnership with the British Olympic Association, Paralympics GB, Sport England and Team GB to help raise much needed funds.
